There’s
no doubt that kitchens have become the focal family
and entertainment center of a household. The kitchen
has evolved from being the room that separated
the entertainer from the audience, to becoming
the star of the show. Interactive preparation
areas, designed with media centers, can turn the
kitchen into the ultimate gathering place for
families to unite, morning, noon and night.
At
Gallery of Kitchens in Westport, owner/designer
Matt Cowan has mounted a 37-inch LCD television
in his showroom. "The television is flush-mounted
behind a Viking stove, underneath an Italian limestone
hood," said Cowan. "This television
can do many things. You can watch television programs
or DVDs, you can connect it to the Internet through
a computer, it can also be used as a baby monitor.
The screen splits, so you can watch two programs,
do half television and half Internet or connect
the monitor to multiple cameras throughout the
home."
Cowan
says kitchen-designated multi-media offerings
help bring families together within a household.
"A tremendous amount of time is spent in
the kitchen," he observed. "It is utilized
first thing in the morning and throughout the
entire day. Typically, the mother is in the kitchen
cooking, while the rest of the family is in another
room watching television. This changes that. Now,
the family gathers around a kitchen island, watches
television and enjoys each other’s company."
